Quilter’s Fancy, located in the country town of Cortland in northeast Ohio, is a store filled with bolts of quilting cotton. Favorite brands of high quality cotton include Northcott, Moda, Maywood, Kona, Marcus, Michael Miller, Free Spirit & more. Favorite styles include Grunge, Stonehenge, reproduction, William Morris, novelties, metallics and batiks. But the word “Fancy” in the store name means more than simply being very fond of fabric.
“Fancywork” is a sewing term from the 1800s, meaning ornamental needlework such as crazy quilting and embroidery. At Quilter’s Fancy you will find 100% silk fabric pieces for crazy quilting along with silk ribbons in all widths from 1/4 inch up to 4 inches wide, french trims, laces, glass beads and very unusual fibers for embellished quilting and embroidery.
Owner Cindy Oravecz creates wall hangings, quilts and clothing featuring dimensional applique using unusual ribbons, fabric, hand embroidery, trim and embellishments. See the quilts, clothing and accessories that are embellished with fabric, ribbon, beads, trim, fiber and other adventuresome and surprising objects. Techniques from the past and the present include ruching, dimensional fabric and ribbon flowers, stumpwork, gold work, fiber work, embroidery and more.
